“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” -Melody Beattie-
It’s that time again. The new year is upon us and everyone is looking to better themselves. Here at S&S Home builders in St. George, we want to make sure that your home is just as fit and beautiful as you are. Below are some things that you can do to make ensure that you and your home are ready for an amazing 2016.
‘Declutterize’ (Clean the house)
Ok, so declutterize is not an actual word but it describes perfectly what is needed at the beginning of each and every year. You need to clean up after the huge mess that was left in the wake of the holidays and get your home back into tip-top shape. You should also get rid of all that junk that you have been tripping over and stuffing into the “storage closet”. You don’t want to end up on an episode of TLC’s Hoarders: Buried Alive. Declutterizing will also help you to have more space and make the house seem bigger. You can make some extra cash by selling anything that you don’t use or donating it to charity.
Make it Rain (Become financially responsible)
One of the best ways to bring in the new year is to make sure that your investment (house) is secure. I know, I know, paying extra towards your mortgage is not very sexy but it is a great way to keep you and your family protected. Paying down the principle balance on the first mortgage, paying off that second mortgage, or setting aside money for home repairs will make it so that you save money in the long run and are ready for unexpected disasters. Every little bit helps.
If it Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It (Home repairs)
Everyone knows the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” but let’s be honest, you have been putting off that repair for the past six months and your wife is not happy about it. The beginning of the year is the perfect time to unclog that drain, fix the hole in the wall or put your daughter’s door back on its hinges after you removed it to punish her. Start out with the little projects and work your way up to the bigger problems. This will build your confidence in your ability to accomplish the task and make sure that you don’t get burned out too quickly. Don’t get discouraged, you can do it!
A Change of Scenery (Rearrange furniture and decorations)
By merely changing the location of things in a room or decorations, it can make your house look brand new. Painting walls different colors, moving furniture around, and getting new decorations can have a huge impact on the overall ‘feng shui’ of your home. Be creative and look for different ways to accent the room and its surroundings.
Look Outside the Box (DIY projects)
With the invention of pinterest, no one has an excuse to not do DIY projects to beautify your home. There are millions of ideas, many of them are very simple and cost little to nothing. Take a little time researching ideas, then go to work. It can be something very basic that takes a couple minutes or it could be a more complex project that takes days. Whatever it is, have fun with it. Work with your loved ones to get them away from the TV and computer and help them to feel a sense of accomplishment. Use it as bonding time for the family (as well as free labor)!
Whatever you do, good luck with your personal resolutions as well as the resolutions for your home. Make 2016 the year you’ll never forget.
